Roy DeWayne Halverson, of Owatonna, age 88, passed away May 27, 2019 at his residence.
Funeral service will be 11:00 AM Thursday May 30, 2019 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Owatonna, with Rev. Amanda Weinkauf presiding. Friends may greet the family from 5-7:00 PM Wednesday May 29, at the Brick Meger Funeral Home and one hour prior to the funeral at church. Interment will take place at Valley Grove Cemetery, Nerstrand.
DeWayne was born March 18, 1931 on the family farm in rural Rice County to parents, Sigward and Josephine (Reed) Halverson. He attended country school and the Medford School. DeWayne married Gertrude Sobrack in Owatonna in 1950. In 1954 DeWayne started to work as a custodian at the Medford Public School. He also worked at the Steele County Law Enforcement Center for 10 years. He came back to the Medford School System before retiring in 1993.
DeWayne sat on the Medford City Council in charge of the planning and zoning committee for many years.
He was active with youth baseball/tee-ball, and a school bus driver. DeWayne was a big supporter of Medford athletics, taking care of the football field, in which he took great pride. He was instrumental for starting the ice-skating rink, and during days the school was closed or on the weekends, DeWayne would come in and let students into the gymnasium to practice.
DeWayne is survived by his wife, Gert; children, Dennis (Roberta) Halverson, Owatonna, Gary (Carol Phillips) Halverson, Owatonna, Sharon (Donald) Wobschall, Owatonna; six grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren; one sister, Grace Halverson Johnson, Long Beach, CA.
He was preceded in death by, parents; two brothers and five sisters; and one daughter-in-law, Patricia Halverson.
