John S. Peterson, 94, of Owatonna passed away peacefully at Prairie Manor in Blooming Prairie, MN on April 7, 2020. The memorial service will be held at a later date at Sacred Heart Church with full military honors at Sacred Heart Cemetery.
John was the son of Palmer Peterson and Robina (Mackie) Peterson. He was born March 14, 1926 in Austin, MN. He lived his childhood in Blooming Prairie, MN. His true graduation class was 1944, but he enlisted in the Navy instead. Before he left for the Navy, he was sleeper for the Owatonna Fire Department for one summer. He came back from the Navy in 1946 and went back to Blooming Prairie High School and was very active in sports. He graduated in 1947.
John married Esther Wanous on February 10, 1947 at Sacred Heart Church in Owatonna, MN. In 1948, John started work at Bordens in Owatonna and worked there for 19 years until it changed hands to AMPI and then he worked there for 12 more years. John then went to work at Treasure Cave in Faribault, MN for 10 years and then retired in 1988.
John and Esther loved the game of golf and both worked at Brooktree Golf Course for 26 years. Also, they were avid sports fans of all the Owatonna High School games. In 2011, John received the Hall of Fame Award in Blooming Prairie for his high school accomplishments for football, basketball, and baseball.
John was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Owatonna for 73 years. He also lived at Real Life in Owatonna from 2007-2019 before moving to Prairie Manor in Blooming Prairie, MN. John enjoyed his life to the fullest with good times with family, wonderful friends, and a good round of golf.
John is survived by his children: Pat (Wayne) Winter of Weslaco, Texas, Mary Ellen (Dale) Pedersen of Rochester, MN, John Peterson of Swanville, MN, and Sue (Jeff) Ost of Owatonna, MN; grandchildren: Greg Winter of Rochester, MN, Kris (Dirk) Stienessen of Byron, MN, Kevin (LeeAnn) Winter of Cypress, Tx, Jenny (Dean) Thompson of Rochester, MN, Stephanie (Jake) Johnson of Minneapolis, MN, and Dana (Bill) Wood of Owatonna; and 13 great-grandchildren.
John was preceded in death by his parents, wife Esther, sister Janet Miller, and grandson Jason Ost.
